The term ‘body positivity’ has so many different meanings.
The common sentiment, though, is that it refers to the act of loving yourself and your body, regardless of how your physical appearance compares to current beauty standards.
Living in the social media age, the internet has played a key role in bringing body positivity to prominence.
By that same token, social media has also played a big part in promoting hegemonic beauty standards.
For young people and even adults, the internet is a cesspool of mixed messages about what beauty is and the unrealistic expectations for what our bodies ‘should’ look like.
When we think negatively about our body image it can lead to both physical and mental health problems which include:
Low self-esteem
Depression
Eating disorders
Body dysmorphic disorder
Self-harm
Mood disorders
Despite these confusing messages, maintaining a positive body image is so important, as it helps build our self-esteem and contributes to better overall mental and physical health.
When we feel comfortable in our own skin, that confidence positively affects important aspects of our life, such as our work and relationships.
Here are a few ways to live a more body positive lifestyle
Create a list of your favorite things about yourself, and take time to appreciate everything your body does for you.
Take time to find clothes you love! When our outfit fits and flatters us, this can help facilitate a positive body image.
Practice self-care. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat healthy food, meditate, and exercise. It’s okay to take breaks when you need them.
Lastly, surround yourself with positive people. Cut off people who bring negativity into your life, unfollow social media accounts or “influencers” that may be promoting these unrealistic beauty standards.
