Starting Therapy in the New Year: Finding the Right Fit

Choosing to start therapy is a big step, and we’re so glad you’re here.

Finding the right therapist doesn’t have to be overwhelming—here’s a quick guide to help you get started on your mental health journey this new year!

1. Know What You Want

Think about your goals for therapy. Whether it’s stress, relationships, identity, or life transitions, finding someone who specializes in what you need will make a difference.

2. Virtual or In-Person?

Both options work—choose what’s most comfortable for you and your schedule.

3. Ask Questions

Most therapists offer a free consultation. Use that time to ask things like:

  • “How do you approach therapy?”

  • “Do you have experience with ______?” (e.g., anxiety, cultural identity, LGBTQIA+ topics)

  • “What if I don’t feel like we’re a good fit?”

4. You’re Allowed to Be Picky

Want a certain personality, background, or approach? That’s okay! Feeling safe and understood is key to making progress.

Starting therapy is about you. Take your time, trust your instincts, and know that finding the right support can make 2025 a year of growth and healing.

The therapists here at Crave Counseling are here to help—let’s take the first step together.
